The Small Carpathian Wine Route
Although world encyclopaedias of wine typically grant Slovakia only a brief mention, and while Slovak wines rarely occupy much shelf space in foreign stores and wineshops, Slovakia is undeniably a country of wine, and its wines and wine-growing areas deserve the attention of visitors. At present, there are six officially-recognised wine-growing areas in Slovakia, all of them situated along the country's southern border: the Small Carpathian, Southern Slovak, Nitra, Central Slovak, Eastern Slovak and Tokaj (also known as Tokay) regions. The largest of these is the Small Carpathian region in the west of Slovakia, where vineyards cover the south-eastern slopes of the Small Carpathian mountains as well as the areas surrounding the towns of Hlohovec and Skalica. The smallest and most exclusive region is Tokaj, which is limited to only a few municipalities in south-eastern Slovakia and is closely linked to the winemaking region of the same name across the border in Hungary.
